SmartTotal User Guide
Welcome to SmartTotal, your one-tap tool for summing text lists! Paste or type a list like "Apples 1k, Bananas 500" and get a clean table with totals instantly. This guide explains how we process your lists and ensure accurate results, so you can trust every sum.
How It Works
SmartTotal scans your text to find items and numbers, then adds them up. Here's what happens when you hit "Calculate Total":
1. Splitting Your List
- Each line (separated by a new line) becomes one item, like a grocery or budget entry.
- Example:
White groundnut 1500 Ndole 1k
→ Two items: "White groundnut" and "Ndole".
2. Finding Numbers
- We look for numbers that represent values, like prices or totals (e.g. "1500", "1k").
- Numbers like quantities ("2 packs") or list markers ("1.") are ignored to focus on what matters.
- Example: "Miondo 2 packs 1k" → We pick "1k" (1000), not "2".
3. Understanding Shorthands
- We recognize number shortcuts from around the world, like "1k" for 1000 or "2M" for 2000000.
- See the full list below for what we support.
4. Cleaning Up Markers
- If your list has numbers (1., 2.), letters (a), b)), or symbols (-, *), we remove them and number items automatically (1, 2, 3).
- Example:
1. Apples 500 - Bananas 1k
→ Becomes:
# | Item | Value |
---|---|---|
1 | Apples | 500 |
2 | Bananas | 1000 |
5. Building the Table
- Each item gets a row with:
- #: Auto-numbered (1, 2, 3, …)
- Item: The description (e.g. "Miondo 2 packs")
- Value: The number we found (e.g. 1000)
- A Total row at the bottom shows the sum.
6. Saving for Later
- After calculating, you'll see "Save this calculation?" Click "Save" to store it.
- View saved lists via "Saved Calculations", delete one by one, or clear all with "Clear All".
Supported Number Shorthands
SmartTotal understands these global shortcuts to make summing easy, no matter where you're from:
- Thousand (1000): k, K, rb, kh, th, mil, lac
- Ten Thousand (10000): 萬, W
- Hundred Thousand (100000): L, Lac, lakh
- Million (1000000): M, m, mio, mn, MM, jt
- Ten Million (10000000): Cr, crore
- Hundred Million (100000000): 億, yi
- Billion (1000000000): B, b, bn, Ar, mrd
- Trillion (1000000000000): T, t, tn
Examples:
- "1k" = 1000
- "1.5M" = 1500000
- "1Cr" = 10000000
- "2萬" = 20000
Notes:
- We assume "m" means million unless your list suggests otherwise.
- Typos like "1kk" are fixed to "1k" (1000).
- If we're unsure, we'll guess and highlight the row to let you check.
How We Ensure Accuracy
We've built SmartTotal to handle messy lists and still get it right. Here's how:
-
Smart Number Picking:
- We choose numbers that look like prices or totals (e.g. "1k" in "2 packs 1k"), not quantities ("2").
- If a line has multiple numbers, we prioritize the last one or any with a shorthand.
-
Currency Support:
- Symbols like $, €, ₦, or words like "dollar" help us spot values (e.g. "Apples $500" → 500).
- We remove them for clean totals.
-
List Cleanup:
- Markers (1., a), -, *) are stripped so they don't confuse the sum.
- If most lines have markers, we treat it as a list; otherwise, we keep things flexible.
-
Typo Fixes:
- We correct "1 k" to "1k", "1,5k" to "1.5k", or "1kk" to "1k".
- Commas and dots are sorted out based on your list's style.
Tips for Best Results
- Clear Values: Put the price or total at the end of each line (e.g. "Apples 500").
- Use Shorthands: Write "1k" or "2M" for big numbers — it helps us spot them.
- Keep It Simple: Avoid mixing too many number types in one line (e.g. "2 apples 3 packs 500" might confuse).
- Check Yellow Rows: If a row is highlighted, double-check your input for clarity.
